Being a teacher there are moments in which you seem to be some what of a celebrity. These moments often occur when you least expect them. Like you are wondering down the grocery aisle, trying to figure out if you have forgotten anything, and you are seemingly attacked from behind in a big hug from one of your students. Then there are the moments when they spot you from across the store and then feel the need to yell out your name and wave like a crazy person so that the whole store knows exactly who you are and that the child knows you. Though my personal favorite is the sly look from around the side of a basket or parents leg that says "I know you but your aren't supposed to be here.
Being the music teacher these moments are always a bit awkward for me. I have over 500 kids that come through my room every week so if I can actually call the child by name that is a small miracle. But the most awkward part of it all is that look you get from the parents. They kind of glare at you as if to say "Why does my child know you and why don't I know you?" Now I do know some parents but 99% of parents the only time they see me is if they come to one of our performances. So I have to quickly introduce myself and and say I am the music teacher and then the scary glare goes away.
Tonight I went out with a fellow teacher of mine and of course we ran into one of the kids that go to our school. Now my friend didn't have this little girl in her class but she was one of those kids that knows everyone. So as soon as the girl saw my friend she had to say hi. She was so excited to see two teachers together that she told on of the guys working at the restaurant that she knew the two of us. Then the most lovely moment of them all was as we were walking out the door you hear from all the way across the room my name being called and a little girl waving good bye. Of course half the restaurant turned to see who she was saying good bye too. So I politely waved and headed out the door.
I guess being a teacher is the closest to being a celebrity I will ever get!
