Yesterday, my brother e-mailed me and wanted to know what it is that draws 20 somethings to church. He is an associate pastor of a large church in Broken Arrow, and they have a large gap in people between the ages of 18-29. Sadly enough this is a recurring trend in most churches these days, especially if you are not in a college town, and close to the university in that town. And even then this demographic of people disappear from church.
Many churches have strong youth programs but as soon as we are out of the house something happens. I guess we get a taste of freedom and are soon faced with the reality of "Am I a Christian because my parents are or is this really what I believe and want to live out?" Sadly many wavier during this time of life. In the process of "finding ourselves" we completely lose who we are in Christ. Then for some reason once we get married and start having our own children we realize we want our kids to be raised in church so we start attending again.
I had a hard time with this question because I am not your average 20 something. I am realizing more and more that being a strong Christian at this age is something very rare. I am completely blessed that God got ahold of me when I was young. I never went through the "finding myself' phase. I also began to realize that what I look for in a church, a passionate heart for prayer and worship, is not what other 20 somethings are looking for.
I posed this question to my roommates last night and the things we came up with:
*A sense of Community
*A non-traditional laid back atmosphere
*Evening worship times, so you can sleep in Sunday Morning
*Small Group gathering times through out the week
So I pose this question to you, my wonderful friends who love me enough to read my blog, What do you think are the things the average 20 somethings are looking for in a church? What would draw them in and encourage them in their walk with Christ?
